The Proposal
/
Happy sausage surprise for one
Introduction
I proposed to my girlfriend Wren in Prospect Park in the fall. As we were walking home—one of us with new jewelry—we ran into her ex. He was the first person that found out we got engaged, before our parents or friends. It wasn’t the worst way to meet your partner’s ex for the first time. Maybe it’s a good omen.
For the Bavarian breakfast version—aka Weißwurst Frühstück—use white sausages, wheat beer, skip the peppers (onion only), and serve with mustard instead of hot sauce.
Ingredients
- Sweet Italian sausages
- 2 cans of "sausage beer", i.e. 'Gansett, PBR, High Life, Bud, etc.
- 1 green bell pepper
- 1 large Spanish onion. Pro Tip™️: If you cannot find 1 large Spanish onion, use 2 smaller Spanish onions.
Instructions
- Slice the pepper and onion.
- Lightly oil a large pan.
- Dump pepper / onion into the large pan on high heat.
- Open a beer and begin drinking it.
- Sauté pepper / onion for a minute or two, then add the sausage. Prock their skin with a fork. Lower the heat to low.
- Occasionally, roll the sausages around. Whenever the pan looks like it is starting to lose moisture and the onions start sticking, gently waterfall just a sip of beer onto your sausage friends. Sometimes I make a little dam out of the pepper / onions to contain the beer around the sausages. It is like a little hot tub for them!
- Continue this process for about 20 minutes, until the sausages are thoroughly cooked. Depending on the rate that you are drinking the beer, you may need multiple cans.
- Stuff the sausage, peppers, and onions into a toasted, sliced ciabatta roll and garnish with Frank's Red Hot.
